Supporting Children. Empowering Families. Strengthening Communities.
The Southside Child Advocacy Network (SCAN) was created to help bridge gaps in child safety, advocacy, prevention education, and community support throughout Southside Virginia.
Families navigating concerns related to student safety, harassment, assault, bullying, discrimination, trauma, educational access, disability accommodations, or system accountability are often faced with overwhelming processes and limited access to clear information and coordinated resources. SCAN exists to help connect families, schools, professionals, and community partners with practical resources, advocacy support, prevention education, and collaborative solutions.
SCAN believes that every child deserves:
Safe educational environments
Access to supportive and trauma-informed systems
Respectful and equitable treatment
Protection from discrimination and retaliation
Access to resources and advocacy
Adults willing to listen, respond, and act
Our Mission
Our Mission
SCAN exists to help families navigate some of life's most difficult moments with knowledge, support, and hope.
We believe child safety begins with connection, education, and empowered communities. Through prevention education, advocacy support, resource navigation, and community partnerships, SCAN helps families understand their options, access trusted resources, and advocate for the children they love.
Whether a parent has concerns about online safety, school-related issues, child abuse prevention, Title IX protections, or simply doesn't know where to turn next, SCAN provides guidance and support along the way.
We are committed to strengthening child safety and family well-being across rural Southside Virginia through:
Prevention and safety education
Family resource navigation

SCAN was created with a commitment to strengthening local support networks and improving access to information and advocacy resources for families across Southside Virginia.
Our Approach
SCAN believes meaningful change happens through:
Collaboration over isolation

Meet the Founder
Deanna Wagstaff Lester, MPH is a local rural healthcare and public service professional with extensive experience in emergency medical services, healthcare advocacy, case management, and trauma-informed community support.
Through years of working directly with rural families and navigating complex systems of care, she recognized a critical gap in accessible education, advocacy, and support related to child safety, peer sexual misconduct, and Title IX concerns in rural communities.
This organization was created to help bridge that gap through education, prevention, resource connection, and advocacy-focused support for children and families.
